Hello, 2020! I’m really excited about this new year, and I’m optimistic that it will bring some new highs and memorable adventures. Don’t get me wrong…2019 was a pretty good year; but, I am looking for more success and happiness in this new decade.
One of my major highlights of last year was starting this blog. I began Beauty In Color on Instagram in August 2018, but the actual blog didn’t launch until February 2019. And I moderated my first panel under Beauty In Color. Posh & Popular’s 3rd Annual Fashion & Beauty Summit was such a great experience! I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll be doing it again this year.
I also loved my first trip to Italy! Italy has been on my travel wishlist for a few years now, so I was thrilled that I was able to visit to travel to Venice, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast this past August. For more on how I survived that flight using skincare, check out this post.
In the last year, I’ve tested out quite a few products. I’ve tried many that I’ve loved, and some that I’ve hated (and not written about).
With new cleansers, creams, masks, and moisturizers coming out daily, the competition is fierce. And as you know, skincare results aren’t instantaneous. It can take weeks and even months to decipher whether a moisturizer is actually strengthening your skin barrier. Or whether that vitamin C serum really does diminish dark spots.
So, that’s why I’m here. In the spirit of year-end roundups, here are my favorite beauty products of 2019 that I have reached for consistently.
CLEANSERS & CLEANSING TOWELS
I love face cleansing oils and balms! So, I’m happy I found two new oil cleansers that I reached for consistently in 2019. Absolute Joi’s Sunflower & Moringa Fresh Cleansing Oil has a wonderfully silky texture and easily removes all my eye makeup. And Pai’s Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil is divine! It’s a lightweight oil with a smooth texture and moves over the skin so easily. There are essential oils, but they have not been irritating in the least.
And I cannot forget to shout out my tried-and-true cleansing balm, Clinique’s Take The Day Off (TTDO) Balm. I started using this Clinique’s TTDO balm in 2018, and it has been a staple in my skincare arsenal ever since. It’s such an effective oil cleanser. No frills, but it gets the job done without irritating my skin or eyes. Check out my mini-review of this cleansing balm here on my Instagram page.
The water-based cleanser I loved (and reached for) the most in 2019 was Jordan Samuel Skin’s The Matinee Gel Cleanser. This cleanser was such a pleasant surprise! For more information on this cleanser, check out my mini-review here on my Instagram page.
As far as cleansing towels go, I only have one favorite, Clean Skin Club’s Clean Towels. These disposable, biodegradable towels are large, soft, and durable. I actually have been using these for over a year. They are a staple in my routine. For more information, check out my blog review here.
Although I am not adamant about consistently using a regular toner, I do prefer to exfoliate my face using an acid toner. The two I reached for the most last year was Biologique Recherche’s P50V 1970 and Paula’s Choice’s 2% BHA Exfoliating Liquid. Both of these acid toners are cult-favorites, and I see why. For more details on the P50V 1970, check out my blog post here discussing my initial thoughts on this acid toner.
I love serums! Serums have a higher concentration of active ingredients and are great for targeting specific skincare concerns. And out of all your skincare products, serums are the ones that work the hardest and will usually be the ones that transform your skin. As I always say, if you can only afford one premium product in your routine, invest in a good serum.
My favorite serums this year were:
As you can probably tell from my Instagram stories, this has become my new favorite vitamin C serum. This serum has a thin, watery, consistency, and absorbs quickly into my skin without me having to wait before layering on other products. Check out my mini-review here.
Now, everyone knows I love a good hyaluronic acid serum. And I am trying out a few new ones now. But, this hydrating serum has been my go-to for a few years now. This serum literally feels like a big glass of water for your skin. I have a mini-review on Instagram for this serum too.
Now, this is the best textured hyaluronic acid serum there is for under $10. It’s lightweight, not sticky or heavy, and it’s fragrance-free. Sometimes there’s not much more you need to explain about a hydrating serum than that.
This has become another favorite. Now we all know why we love peptides as they are our anti-aging wonders. They help stimulate collagen production, improve elasticity and hydration, help cellular renewal and turnover. And this serum has a lightweight texture that absorbs quickly and layers easily. I know a review of this product is long over-due, so expect one in 2020.
Now, I cannot say that I have used a lot of niacinamide serums, but I have loved this one. It helped my fines lines appear more smoothed out, and after application, my skin has a glowier and healthier-looking appearance. Check out my mini-review here.
I have raved about this serum too. This serum provided the most notable effects in the quickest amount of time. There is literally a noticeable difference in my skin the next morning after application. My face will look more hydrated and plump, and the darkness under my eyes is reduced. I have a mini-review of this product on Instagram here.
I feel like I was overloaded with moisturizers in 2019. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good moisturizing cream, but I can only use but so many on my ONE face. However, the moisturizers I reached for all the time in 2019 were Good Science Beauty’s Hydrating Cream, Drunk Elephant’s Polypeptide Moisturizer, and Paula’s Choice’s Omega+ Complex Moisturizer.
I have a mini-review on the Good Science Beauty’s Hydrating Cream here. And I will finally get a full-size of the Drunk Elephant Polypeptide Moisturizer this year. I literally had about 10 travel-size containers! Also, look out for a more thorough review on Paula’s Choice’s Omega+ Complex line, which will include a review of this moisturizer. I think this line might be comparable to Dr. Jart’s Ceramidin line. I am especially loving the Omega+ Complex serum!
One of my 2019 Skin Resolutions was to wear more sunscreen. No single skincare factor is more critical to preventing aging than avoiding excess sun exposure! And the best way to do that is by wearing sunscreen. I was not too fond of a few new sunscreens that I tried this year. But, my favorites were Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid, Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen and D’Alba’s Waterfull Essence Sun Cream.
Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen blends seamlessly on my darker skin tone. It’s totally invisible, weightless, colorless, scentless, and helps smooth the appearance of my pores. It doubles as a great primer too. Check out my mini-review here.
I fell in love with Paula’s Choice’s Youth-Extending Fluid 50 over the summer. But, I am using this in the colder months too. It’s lightweight, fast-absorbing, non-greasy, and leaves no white cast! Check out my mini-review here.
D’Alba’s is a nice sunscreen too. It’s lightweight and leaves no white cast also. It’s a little heavier than the Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Fluid 50 but not greasy (Thank God!).
I just started delving deeper into body care in October, so there aren’t many favorites here. But, I did fall in love with the Necessaire line. Their fragrance-free body wash has a gel-oil hybrid texture and feels great on the skin. And their thin-thick, soft cream that feels lightweight yet nourishing. When it’s cold, I tend to apply a little jojoba oil on before using the body lotion. Hey, I have dry skin…I can’t help it! And their body exfoliator is gentle yet effective. I haven’t tried their sex gel yet. Be on the lookout for a full review of this brand in the coming weeks!
As far as makeup goes, I still find myself gravitating towards things that are easy and quick, which correlates to bronzers, mascaras, eye pencils, and lipsticks.
The bronzers I used most last year were The Lip Bar’s Fresh Glow, Mented Cosmetics Mented x ABF Compact Duo, and Guerlain’s Terracotta Bronzing Powder. I used the Lip Bar Fresh Glow in the shade Just Got Paid. Its such a lovely color combo on me. I use the Season 2 Compact Duo from Mented Cosmetics. This has been a great bronzer, especially when I have a tan! And the Guerlain bronzer has been a staple in my routine for over three years now. I like the shade 7 to wear in the colder months when I am paler, and I wear the shade 9 in the warmer months when my skin tone is a little darker and redder.
My favorite mascaras in 2019 were Milk’s KUSH High Volume Mascara, Loreal Voluminous Original Mascara, and Marc Jacobs’ Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara. Marc Jacobs mascara looks great on me. It makes my lashes stand out more. I just wish it didn’t dry out before I finished the tube. Womp. Womp. Milk’s KUSH mascara is coming with me in 2020. It helps with the volume and length of my lashes and doesn’t irritate my eyes like a lot of other mascaras do. Loreal’s Voluminous mascara has been a staple in my makeup bag for over 10 years! I always go back to it after trying more expensive options.
As far as eye pencils go, my favorite eye pencils this year are Gee Beauty’s Precision Brow Pencil, Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner, and Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. I use Gee Beauty’s Precision Brow Pencil in the shade Deep Brunette and Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel in the shade Soft Brown on my eyebrows. I like my eyebrows to look put together but natural, and using this eye pencil combo does the trick. The Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in the shade Blacquer 42 has been great as my undereye pencil. And I appreciate that it doesn’t run even though my eyes water often.
If you didn’t know, I love a red lip. I think it can elevate any look! So, it’s not a surprise that my favorite lipsticks of 2019 are red. I wore Nars’ Inappropriate Red, The Lip Bar’s Liquid Matte lipstick in the shade Bawse Lady, and MAC’s Ruby Woo. All of these are classic reds that don’t have an orange or pink hue.
So, that’s it! Thank you SO much for your support in 2019 and be ready for some new, fun, and informative content this year. There’s guaranteed to be more content AND more videos in 2020!
