My Fall Skincare Routine

Can you believe its already fall? Even though fall officially started today, NYC’s weather has already been fluctuating with colder temperatures.

Since it’s a new season, I’m back with another skincare routine for you. As NYC esthetician Shatelle Wins, states:

“Skincare is a wardrobe for your face. As we adjust and alter our clothing to prepare for fall, we must also do the same for our skin pantry.” – NYC esthetician Shatelle Wins

So, today I’m giving you an update on everything I’m currently using, testing, and loving for the fall, plus I’m listing the steps in the order I layer them.

In case you missed my other seasonal routines, check out what I was using in the summer and winter. And if you’re starting your skincare journey, check out my post on How To Build A Skincare Routine, so you know what products you’ll need to invest in first.

MY FALL SKINCARE GOALS

Before we get started, I want to give you a few details on my skin. My skin is dry, sensitive, and I’m eczema-prone. I’m also prone to dehydration. I’m 38 years old, and I live in New York, where it’s getting chilly and drier. I’m just putting that out there since you should consider your environment, age, lifestyle, and skin concerns when assessing your skincare routine.

My fall skincare routine is curated to address:

  • ANTI-AGING: There are a few products in my routine that have helped keep my skin smooth, soft, even, and bouncy. So, expect to see retinol, peptides, and my Bioeffect EGF serum in my routine. I also want to address face puffiness and the fine lines in the eye area. So, I’ll be trying out some eye creams and doing more facial massages.
  • SKIN BARRIER REPAIR: My skin naturally gets drier and more dehydrated when it gets colder, which can easily compromise your skin barrier. So, I like to layer products that hydrate and strengthen my skin barrier.

Now, you will see some new products below. While my products may frequently change since I’m testing new things, my skincare routine steps don’t really change. Consistency is crucial in skincare, so stick to a routine if you want to see results.

MY MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE

The purpose of my morning skincare routine is to prep and protect my skin for the day. In my opinion, my morning routine is no different from having a shower before getting dressed.

STEP 1: CLEANSER

I generally cleanse morning and night.

I know the topic of whether to wash your face in the morning is a controversial one. But, I believe you should wash your face twice a day. Proper cleansing is the foundation of your skincare routine. If it’s not done correctly, then the rest of your skincare cannot do their job properly.

A good cleanser should be gentle and non-stripping. Your face shouldn’t feel stiff, irritated, dry, or tight after you wash your face.

STEP 2: VITAMIN C SERUM (OR AN ANTIOXIDANT SERUM)

Everyone knows how much I LOVE Vitamin C for my skin.

For reference, vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps your skin’s natural regeneration process. It helps with overall brightness, evening the skin tone, and getting rid of those pesky dark marks (also known as hyperpigmentation).

MY CURRENT VITAMIN C & ANTIOXIDANT SERUMS IN ROTATION:
  1. Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster (reviewed here). This serum has been in rotation for a while. It was even in my 2019 Best In Beauty List
  2. Pestle & Mortar Vitamin C 2 Phase Serum

I also rotate in Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Anti-Pollution Drops during this step since it’s an antioxidant serum.

STEP 3: HYDRATING MISTS & ESSENCES

This is when I start to add hydration to my routine. Hydrated skin has many benefits, and keeps our skin barrier functioning correctly, making it more resilient to environmental stressors and irritants.

Most times, I just mist and go straight into the next step. During the colder months, I add more hydrating layers because they give me more hydration and prep my skin to receive the rest of my products better.

  1. Caudalie Grape Water
  2. Jordan Samuel Skin Hydrating Mist

STEP 4: SERUMS

Serums generally have a higher concentration of active ingredients because they’re made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeper into the skin.

Since my skincare routine focuses on anti-aging and maintaining my skin barrier health, so you’ll see a lot of products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, collagen, peptides, omega fatty acids, and retinol. I only use retinol at night, though.

MY CURRENT SERUMS IN ROTATION:
  1. Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster (reviewed here)

STEP 6: MOISTURIZER

Cooler months come with more emollient moisturizers. If you have a summer moisturizer that you need to finish, consider adding a face oil to it for the fall. The main goal of a good moisturizer is to lock in all the goodness you’ve put on your face beforehand and prevent water loss.

“Going into fall, you might begin to feel more dehydrated as the humidity decreases. It’s the perfect time to ramp up to richer moisturizers and reincorporate retinol into your routine.” – NYC esthetician, Lara Kaiser

MY CURRENT MOISTURIZERS IN ROTATION:
  1. Good Science Beauty Hydrating Cream (my discount code “BEAUTYINCOLOR” will give you 25% off any Good Science Beauty products at checkout)
  2. Youth To The People Adaptogen Cream
  3. Paula’s Choice Replenishing Moisturizer

STEP 7: SUNSCREEN

Sunscreen is one of the essential skincare steps in your routine. If you aren’t wearing SPF, you can’t expect results from any other steps. Protect your skin and wear a broad-spectrum SPF every day, no matter what. I prefer a broad-spectrum SPF because they’re easy to rub in.

MY CURRENT SUNSCREENS IN ROTATION:
  1. Paula’s Choice Youth Extending Daily Fluid 50
  2. Paula’s Choice CLEAR Ultra-Light Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 30+
  3. Dr. Barbara Sturm Sun Drops SPF 50

STEP 8: LIP BALM

My lips are guaranteed to become more chapped with the colder weather. But, I have a few discoveries to tell you about. These are the lip balms that don’t leave your lips looking greasy but ensure your lips won’t dry out in 30 minutes.

MY EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE

The purpose of my evening skincare routine is to repair and correct my skin.

STEP 1: OIL CLEANSERS (FIRST CLEANSE)

There’s no arguing the importance of an adequately cleansed face, and that includes an oil cleanser. Check out my blog on oil cleansers for more of my thoughts on the topic.

As part of the double cleansing process or as a stand-alone cleanser, oil cleansers help give you clean, soft, and smooth skin. They draw out oil-based impurities such as sebum, SPF, makeup, and pollutants on your face. So when you finally use your water-based cleanser, it can get into your pores without any interference.

Now, I enjoy oil cleansers and balm cleansers. So, I won’t steer you towards one over the other. I recommend that you find an oil cleanser that you love, and make sure you use every night (even if you’re not wearing makeup).

STEP 2: WATER-BASED CLEANSER (SECOND CLEANSE)

I typically reach for creamier cleanser during the winter months since I am on the drier side, but there are a few gel cleansers that I’m enjoying too. Again, the key is that the cleanser you use is gentle and non-drying. For more information on water-based cleansers, check out this blog post.

Step 3: Exfoliator (1-2x/week)

When it comes to chemical exfoliators, they come in cleanser, toner, serum, and mask form. My personal preference is an acid toner. In the warmer months, I use an acid toner about 2-3 times a week. But, now that it’s getting colder, I’m dialing it down to 1-2x/week.

MY CURRENT EXFOLIATORS IN ROTATION:
  1. Biologique Recherche P50V 1970 (Check out my initial thoughts on this product here.) I use this the most when I have congestion.

STEP 8: FACE OIL

As the weather gets cooler, I start to incorporate face oils into my routine more regularly. A layer of face oil locks in all the goodness you applied beforehand and helps prevent overnight moisture loss.

I also love to use a good face oil when I give myself a facial massage. Although you can apply face oil in your morning and evening routine, I prefer to use face oils at night. While I don’t want to be a grease ball during the day, I worry less about being a little more “glazed” while I sleep.

“This is usually the time I put retinols and facial oils back into heavy rotation. Having extra occlusives in my fall routine helps me retain moisture longer and protects against harsh winds that can irritate my skin.” – Chicago esthetician, Ashley White.

SKINCARE EXTRAS (USE AS NEEDED)

CLEAN SKIN CLUB’S DISPOSABLE FACE CLOTHS

As you can probably tell, I put a lot into every aspect of my routine. So, I don’t want an unlikely culprit for irritation, i.e., a face towel, breaking me out. Face towels might look clean, but it can collect a lot of dirt, makeup, oil, and dead skin cells that you can’t even see.

So, I’ve been religiously using Clean Skin Club’s Clean Towels for almost two years now. These disposable, biodegradable towels are large, soft, and durable. I use them during my morning and evening routine. For more information, check out my blog review here.

HUMIDIFIER

Here’s when I bring back the humidifier. Humidifiers help add moisture to the air, which increases air hydration. And as we’ve discussed before, our skin needs to be sufficiently hydrated to do its job properly.

FACE MASKS

I am going to fully admit here, when it comes to masks, I’m lazy. I prefer to either use a “sleeping” mask that you don’t rinse off or a sheet mask. Both are great for soothing the skin and help to seal in treatments/serums that have been applied.

DISCLAIMER: Keep in mind that I test a lot of stuff! Your skincare routine doesn’t need to be this intricate. If I’ve inspired you to try something new, I would advise you to introduce just ONE new product into your routine. That way, you’ll know which products are working and not working… and you won’t irritate your skin. Check out my post on How To Build A Routine for your must-have skincare steps.
