My Winter Skincare Routine

Every winter, I get excited about switching up my skincare routine. And this winter season is no exception!

Cold weather calls for more layers of hydration, so I wear more nourishing oils and creams in addition to my serums. And I don’t have to be as careful about preventing breakouts, now that the hot, sticky days of summer are gone.

For reference, my current skin type is dry, sensitive, and I am eczema-prone. I am also prone to dehydration. I am 37 years old, and I live in New York, where it’s cold and dry this time of the year. Just putting that out there since your skincare routine should also reflect your environment, as well as your age, lifestyle, and concerns.

MY WINTER SKINCARE GOALS

So, I built this routine to address the following concerns:

  • ANTI-AGING:  I will be incorporating retinol into my routine this winter. It will mostly be in oil form or with a booster that I can mix into another product. But, retinol is known for overall tightening and brightening. I also want to target some fine lines in the eye area.
  • HYDRATION: My skin is drier in the winter, so I can get away with more layers of hydration. Whereas in the summer, it might make me too oily or break me out.
  • BRIGHTENING: I love a natural glow! So, I’m stepping up the brightening with a few different serums and actives.

I want to preface that while my products may frequently change since I’m testing new things, the steps in my skincare routine don’t really change. Consistency is really crucial when it comes to skincare, so I always recommend sticking to a routine if you want to see results.

I also don’t recommend buying an entirely new routine if you’re just starting out. Just start with the basics: cleanser(s), a moisturizer, and an SPF. These products are the foundation of a solid routine. From there, you can start to incorporate “actives” that will deliver the results you’re looking for, based on your needs and concerns. And make sure to slowly add products into your routine one at a time, to ensure you don’t have any adverse reactions.

Before we get into the products, I want to quickly explain how I choose them. Mainly, it’s about the ingredients. I love ingredients that even skin tone, soothe, hydrate, and moisturize. Every eczema-prone skin type loves to hear those last three words! And the key thing I try to avoid is synthetic fragrances.

MY MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE

CLEANSE

I know the topic as to whether you need to wash your face in the morning or not can be pretty controversial. But, I believe you should wash your face twice a day. I understand that cleansing too much can make you drier, especially if you have drier skin. So, go with what works for you. But, if you are oily and find yourself waking up oily, cleansing in the morning will be beneficial for you.

VITAMIN C SERUM

Everyone knows how much I love Vitamin C for my skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps your skin’s natural regeneration process. This helps with overall brightness, evening the skin tone, and getting rid of those pesky dark marks (otherwise known as hyperpigmentation).

L-ascorbic acid is the most active and potent form of Vitamin C. It’s also the most studied form of Vitamin C. While there are plenty of Vitamin C derivatives out there aimed to be more gentle to those who are sensitive to L-ascorbic acid, they must go through a conversion process. And in general, they are not well studied in their effectiveness. So, if your skin can tolerate L-ascorbic acid, then this is the serum you should use. L-ascorbic acid is quite unstable on its own, so it is typically combined with ferulic acid and vitamin E (tocopherol).

HYDRATING MIST & ESSENCE

This is when I like to start to add hydration. Think of your skin like a sponge. When it’s damp, what you apply afterward absorbs much better.

Sometimes, I just mist, skip the essence, and go straight into the next step. But, lately, I have been adding essences because they give immediate hydration to my skin and prep my skin to better receive the rest of my products.

HYALURONIC ACID SERUM

I am prone to dehydration, so a hyaluronic acid serum is essential for my skin. Hyaluronic acid is a natural humectant, meaning it’s able to draw water into the skin, and helps to make it look more firm, plump, glowy, and youthful. Hydration keeps our skin barrier functioning properly, making it more resilient to environmental stressors and irritants.

Hyaluronic acid in facial products packs a ton of skin-boosting benefits because it basically acts like a sponge for your face by attracting and retaining water. And hydration prevents wrinkle formation and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by dehydration and aging, so your skin looks fuller, smoother, and more supple.

Now, please know that hyaluronic acid must be applied to damp skin and sealed in with a moisturizer to best function. Otherwise, the hyaluronic acid serum can dehydrate you by pulling moisture from deeper layers of your skin onto the surface, where they can evaporate into the air.

The molecular weight of the hyaluronic acid used is essential, which is why I generally struggle with cheaper hyaluronic acid serums. Hyaluronic acid serums with lower molecular weights will sink into the skin and absorb easily. Whereas hyaluronic acid serums with higher molecular weights sit on the surface of the skin and are much less elegant in texture. They can also start to pill when you layering other skincare on top. I’ve definitely noticed the difference when using a low-quality hyaluronic acid serum versus a higher quality one. So, make sure to invest in a good one.

EYE CREAM

As of recent, I have been applying eye creams intending to plump the skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines. I don’t often suffer from puffiness, but if you do, I would suggest using an ice roller or spoon under your eyes to help reduce the swelling. Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done topically to help correct dark circles.

SUNSCREEN

This is one of the most essential skincare steps in your routine. If you aren’t wearing SPF, then you can’t expect results from any of the other steps. Protect your skin and wear a broad-spectrum SPF every day, no matter what.

MY EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE

FIRST CLEANSE

Now, I enjoy oil cleansers and balm cleansers. So, I won’t steer you towards one over the other. What I recommend is that you find an oil cleanser that you love, and make sure you use every night (even if you’re not wearing makeup).

When I am wearing makeup, I sometimes do a triple cleanse where I’ll wipe off makeup with cleansing water, then I’ll use an oil or balm cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser. I know this may seem crazy, but proper cleansing is the foundation of your skincare routine. If it’s not done correctly, then the rest of your skincare cannot also do their job properly.

SECOND CLEANSE

During the winter months, I typically reach for cream cleanser since I am on the drier side, but there are a few gel cleansers that I’m enjoying. I also have one enzyme cleanser that I use to gently exfoliate. Skincare should be intuitive, and I have learned to listen to my skin and adjust my routine as needed!

EXFOLIATING TONER

When it comes to chemical exfoliators, they come in cleanser, toner, serum, and mask form. My personal preference is an acid toner. And I use an acid toner about 2-3 times a week. When I crave some additional exfoliation, I’ll use a stronger acid in place of one of those acid toning sessions. For example, I may use the acid toner twice during the week, and a stronger acid once a week.

HYALURONIC ACID SERUM

I always apply my hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin. Hyaluronic acid is a natural humectant, meaning it’s able to draw water into the skin. It basically acts like a sponge for your face by attracting and retaining water. Hyaluronic acid doesn’t contain any water on its own, though. If your skin is dehydrated, to begin with, and the air around you is dry, then the product can actually suck out the water from your skin. So, always remember that the more hydration you use with hyaluronic acid, the better it works.

TREATMENT SERUMS

Serums, in general, have a higher concentration of active ingredients because they are made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin. This makes them an excellent tool for targeting specific skincare concerns. One of my skincare goals is anti-aging (this is to say that I want my skin to appear youthful, plump, and firm). I’m also concerned with preventing hyperpigmentation and keeping my skin tone even.

Because serums are potent products, using more is not always better. So, be careful before piling on various serums because too many powerful ingredients can irritate sensitive skin.

FYI – An “oil serum” is not a thing, and it should be treated as an oil, not a serum.

  1. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is a vital ingredient in my routine, as it helps fade hyperpigmentation, prevent breakouts, improve skin tone. It also refines the appearance of pores and skin texture. When I consistently incorporate niacinamide into my routine, my skin tone looks more even, with reduced redness.
  2. Peptides are another ingredient I like to incorporate into my skincare routine because they provide significant anti-aging benefits. They target firmness, dullness, wrinkles, and discoloration. Paula’s Choice has a great post on peptides in skincare if you want to learn more.
  3. Retinol – Retinol promotes skin cells turnover, slows down the breakdown of collagen, and thickens the skin where wrinkles start forming. I’ll be incorporating retinol mostly in face oil form, but I am trying out Paula’s Choice Retinol Booster. I mix the booster in with my moisturizer, so it’s not as potent. I don’t want to overdo it and scare myself from continuing.

EYE CREAM

I haven’t found an eye cream I genuinely love, so this is one area where the products will change somewhat regularly. Again— I rarely get puffiness, and I can’t do much about my dark circles with eye creams. I’m starting to see some fine lines now that I’m 37 years old, so the purpose of me applying eye cream is to prevent wrinkles and keep my eye area hydrated.

MOISTURIZER

FACE OIL

I like to apply face oils directly to my skin or mix a few drops into my moisturizer. In the winter, especially, face oils are an essential part of my routine. I also love to use a good face oil when I give myself a facial massage and if my skin is looking a little dull— usually because I’ve been drinking too much, not getting enough sleep, traveling, or not eating properly.

Again, I’m planning to incorporate retinol into my routine via face oil since I know it will be a non-intimidating entry into the retinol world. I’ll update you all on the retinol oils I get.

FACE CLOTHS

I put a lot into every aspect of my routine. So, I don’t want an unlikely culprit for irritation, i.e., a face towel, breaking me out. Face towels might look clean but it can collect a lot of dirt, makeup, oil and dead skin cells that you can’t even see.

So, I’ve been religiously using  Clean Skin Club’s Clean Towels. These disposable, biodegradable towels are large, soft, and durable. And I use them during my morning and evening routine. They are a staple in my routine. For more information, check out my blog review here.

FACE MASKS

I am going to fully admit here, when it comes to masks, I’m lazy. I prefer to either use a “sleeping” mask that you don’t rinse off or a sheet mask. Both are great for soothing the skin and help to seal in treatments/serums that have been applied.

A HUMIDIFIER

Humidifiers have great health benefits. They’re also good for your skin too. Humidifiers help add moisture to the air, which increases air hydration. And for our skin to properly do its job, it needs to be sufficiently hydrated. When the outermost layer of our skin becomes compromised, our skin appears dry. The alternating dry, hot and cold air strips my skin of its natural oils, which causes my eczema to flare up.
⠀⠀
So, if you want hydrated skin this winter, I definitely recommend having a humidifier. I have linked the one I have below but I’m including others that my friends & family have loved too.

DISCLAIMER: Keep in mind that I test a lot of stuff! Your skincare routine doesn’t need to be this involved. If I’ve inspired you to try something new, I would advise you to introduce just ONE new product into your routine at a time. That way, you’ll know which products are working and not working… and you won’t irritate your skin.

Have you tried any of the products I mentioned?
What’s your winter skincare routine?

XOXO,
Dana

#1 on my list…get a humidifier! This was a very detailed, well written post Dana. It’s definitely one to save for future reference. How often do you switch out what’s in your rotation? For example, with your treatment serums, how do you decide which one to use on any given day?

    • January 13, 2020 / 1:02 am

Humidifiers are so great, especially in the winter when the cold air and the dry, artificial heat are hitting your face! I re-evaluate my routine every season and change out a few things based on the season and my skin concerns. I should have another blog post with my spring routine in April.
